SMART Pumps Troubleshooting
- Symptom1 - Gearbox Output shaft does not rotate, even though the motor is running.
- Symptom2 - Gearbox Oil leaking.
- Symptom3 - Gearbox Oil leaking from ventilator.
- Symptom4 - Cam Followers bearing generating heat / noise.
- Symptom5 - Carriage does not maintain contact with cam.
- Symptom6 - Noisy Changeover.
- Symptom7 - Pump will not 'Primer'.
- Symptom8 - Pump will not run.
- Symptom9 - Pump runs but lack of pressure.
- Symptom10 - Paint leaking from inside cover.
- Symptom11 - Excessive Pressure Pulsation.
Symptom1 - Gearbox Output shaft does not rotate, even though the motor is running.
Possible cause
Drive between shafts in the gear unit interrupted.
Remedy
Return the unit for repair and replace gearbox.
Symptom2 - Gearbox Oil leaking.

- from the motor flange
- from the gear unit flange
- from the output oil seal
Possible cause
- Defective gasket on gear unit cover.
- Defective gasket.
- Gear unit not ventilated.
Remedy
- Retighten screws on gear unit cover.
- Return gearbox.
- Check vent is clean/fitted and not the transportation plug.
Symptom3 - Gearbox Oil leaking from ventilator.
Possible cause
Unit overfilled with oil.
Remedy
Check and correct the oil level.
Symptom4 - Cam Followers bearing generating heat / noise.
Possible cause
Bearing needs lubrication.
Remedy
Grease bearing or replace if damage is too great.
Symptom5 - Carriage does not maintain contact with cam.
Possible cause
- Spring tension insufficient.
- Fluid seal friction or piston movement prevented.
Remedy
- Check and replace springs.
- Check fluid section.
Symptom6 - Noisy Changeover
Possible cause
- Spring tension insufficient.
- Fluid seal friction or piston movement prevented.
Remedy
Replace green spider coupling.
Symptom7 - Pump will not 'Primer.
Possible cause
- Air entering the suction hose/manifold.
- Worn piston seals.
- Ball checks not seating correctly.
Remedy
- Check o-rings and hose connections.
- Replace piston seals.
- Inspect, clean/replace balls/seats.
Symptom8 - Pump will not run.
Possible cause
- No power.
- Inverter Unit or safety interlocks 'tripped'.
Remedy
- Check electrical supply.
- Check inverter and fault conditions.
Symptom9 - Pump runs but lack of pressure
Possible cause
- Worn piston seals.
- Inverter Unit or safety interlocks 'tripped'.
Remedy
- Replace piston seals.
- Inspect, clean/replace balls/seats.
Symptom10 - Paint leaking from inside cover.
Possible cause
Bellows seal failure.
Remedy
- Replace bellows seal.
- Check Piston seal, replace as necessary.
Symptom11 - Excessive Pressure Pulsation.
Possible cause
- Ball checks not seating correctly.
- Main shaft bearings worn.
- Cam follower worn.
- Cam direction incorrect.
Remedy
- Replace bellows seal.
- Check Piston seal, replace as necessary.
